Moving to United Arab Emirates – Dubai – Abu Dhabi

The United Arab Emirates has swiftly become one of the most popular destinations for expats. The economy is growing in leaps and bounds and the opportunities to make a very good living in a place where modern facilities and 21st century amenities are part and parcel of the experience are luring foreign workers and their families from all over the world.
That is not to say that moving to the UAE and its flagship city – Dubai is not without its challenges. These challenges can include a climate that is very different from other places on the globe, differences in culture and a religion that places some severe restrictions on lifestyle.
However, that said many companies are choosing to have a presence in Dubai. Its strategic location and modern infrastructure make it an attractive proposition for a regional office.
However leaving for Dubai in the hope of finding a job is not the correct approach. It is essential that those who wish to make Dubai their home base have employment before relocating. The first step in the process is to obtain a residence permit – which in turn will allow the expat to apply for a work permit.
The residence permit is essential for those who want to open a bank account in Dubai, or even renting an apartment or a car. There are a number of different types of residency permits available to those who are taking up employment in Dubai.
Having gainful employment prior to relocating to Dubai is essential as the employer will be responsible for almost all of the paperwork that is required to apply for an employment permit.
Property rental in Dubai can eat up much of the expat’s salary. Although prices have come come since the property market crashed in around 2008 property rental is still expensive. Expat’s should be aware that the rental of property should not exceed around 20 – 25% of their annual salary. It is also important to note that the contract period for renting property is 12 months – and some landlords will require that the deposit is equal to the annual rental.
The challenge of adapting to the strictures of Islam may present the expat -especially if they have a family with other challenges. However, Dubai, in keeping with its commitment to becoming a ‘world city’ is more liberal than other governments in the region. In fact many of the department stores will sell goods relating to Christmas and Easter at the appropriate times of year.
Language should not be an issue. the vast number of expats has prompted the government to make allowances. Street signs and other information are usually displayed in both Arabic and English.
Emigrating to the UAE and especially to Dubai can be a tremendously rewarding experience – not only in monetary terms but also in exposure to new ideas and a unique culture. However those wishing to take up a job in Dubai should ideally consult with an emigration expert. the pitfalls of visa requirements are only some of the challenges that need to be dealt with before taking the leap.
